DVD

Buñuel's first film, the surrealistic masterpiece Un Chien Andalou, was based after an exchange of dreams with co-writer Salvador Dali. This tale of desire, opening innocuously enough with the familiar words “Once Upon A Time”, contains one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history—a razor blade slashing an eyeball. Made in Paris in 1929, it aims to provoke rather than please its audience.

Amid a revolution in a South American mining outpost, a band of fugitives—a roguish adventurer (Georges Marchal), a local hooker (Simone Signoret), a priest (Michel Piccoli), an aging diamond miner (Charles Vanel), and his deaf-mute daughter—are forced to flee for their lives into the jungle. Starving, exhausted, and stripped of their old identities, they wander desperately lured by one deceptive promise of salvation after another. Shot in brilliant Eastmancolor and featuring a star-studded cast, Death in the Garden is a pulsating adventure film alive with Surrealist gestures, making it classic Luis Buñuel. Drums of Calanda DVD

DVD

The new film is punctuated with interviews of local residents: a shepherd, the mayor, drummakers, a young woman who has adopted a little girl from China, men from Morocco, Uruguayan bar owners. The world comes home to Calanda in unexpected ways. The Mayor of the town speaks positively of the influx of immigrants, from the south of Spain and abroad, who help populate this northern town slowly being drained of is own young people who are attracted to life in the larger cities. Juan Luis contrasts the monster-like mechanization of the factories, and their polluting billows of smoke, with the work of craftsmen who still make the drums largely by hand. But this town now has moved into the 21st century. The drumming continues for 26 hours. Even if it is 5 a.m. and rain is pouring down, the drumming doesn’t cease. Men in a café, entranced by the rhythm, pound on the table in unison as if it too were a drum. Each strike against the skin of the drum ties the heartbeat of the drummer to the heartbeat of tradition and the land. SPECIAL FEATURES: New and improved subtiles Running time: 29 mins Technical: Color Spanish with English subtitles Closed captioning (English) Region 1 encoded

Rafael Buñuel, son of the legendary Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel, continues his father’s surrealistic journey, via drawings, sculptures, printmaking, and theater. Born in New York City in 1940, Rafael Buñuel spent his childhood in New York City, Hollywood, and Mexico City. Rafael has written more than twenty plays, most of which have been staged in New York and Los Angeles. While the surrealist thread runs clearly through the artists’ works, Rafael dominates his own distinct style, whose blend of subtlety, irony and keen humor is beautifully communicated in his thought provoking book of 58 drawings, Inkings. As a visual artist, Rafael has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Madrid. His work is placed in numerous private collections in California, New York, Mexico, Paris and Madrid. ISBN: 1-84068-067-9 Price: $25.00 Hardback Pages: 100 ISBN: B000M4OFVY
